For decades, McMillan’s Bakery wasn’t just a bakery—it was a ritual. It was the place you picked up cream doughnuts for the office, or ordered a birthday cake for mom. 15 Haddon Ave, Haddon Township was where many lined up early on Saturday mornings to get the weekend's sweets. McMillan's Bakery shuttered its doors in May 2025, but this historic building is getting a new lease of life:
A Sweet Legacy Spanning 86 Years
McMillan’s Bakery first opened its doors in 1939, founded by George and Evelyn McMillan. George, who had worked as a hosiery knitter before switching careers, likely didn’t know he was about to start a four-generation South Jersey institution.
Over the years, the bakery’s reputation grew. Locals would line up before dawn to snag the bakery’s most beloved treats—especially those famous cream doughnuts. Holidays meant longer lines, and on weekends, the line would snake out the door and down the block.
It wasn’t just about the pastries. McMillan’s became woven into the life of Haddon Township—supplying desserts for celebrations, comfort for tough times, and a familiar smile behind the counter.
The Closing That Broke Hearts
In May 2025, after 86 years in business, McMillan’s Bakery at 15 Haddon Ave, Haddon Township closed for good. The decision wasn’t for lack of customers—in fact, business was strong—but the family had made the choice to close on their own terms, honoring the wishes of their late matriarch.
That final day, regulars lined up one last time. The bakery’s iconic green awning came down, and with it, a chapter of Haddon Township history came to a bittersweet end.
A New Chapter on Haddon Avenue
This summer, South Jersey firm, Grake Construction, purchased the McMillan’s building for $700,000, announcing plans to invest an additional $150,000 in renovations. Their goal? To breathe new life into the space—ideally as another bakery.
“We’d love to see the tradition continue,” said Mark Springer, owner of Grake Construction. “We’re already talking to a few local bakeries who might move in by fall.”
In a twist that makes this dream more likely, the sale included hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of McMillan’s original baking equipment.
More Than Just a Bakery Space
The building isn’t just about sweet treats—it also includes two upstairs apartments, one two-bedroom and one three-bedroom. Both are being fully renovated and are expected to hit the rental market next month. So while the ovens may not be warm just yet, the corner of Haddon Avenue and Strawbridge Avenue is buzzing with potential.
For now, Haddon Township waits—hopeful that by fall, the air will once again be filled with the scent of baking bread and fresh doughnuts. And if Grake Construction’s vision comes to life, McMillan’s legacy won’t just be remembered—it will be reborn.
