Coffee shops aren't exactly unusual in Collingswood, New Jersey. But a coffee shop where the person sitting next to you might have whiskers, four paws, and be looking for a forever home? That's certainly new.

This summer, Catmosphere Cafe & Lounge has officially opened at 557 Haddon Avenue, bringing Collingswood its first-ever cat cafe (and another unique small business) to the borough's thriving downtown. The concept combines coffee, tea, and treats with a separate lounge filled with adoptable cats—creating a place where South Jersey residents can relax, meet some new feline friends, and potentially go home having found a new member of the family.

Collingswood's New Cat Cafe Is Already Finding Cats Homes

Catmosphere officially opened its doors on July 10, 2026. Within its first week, three cats had already found their forever homes. The cafe has partnered with Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center in Blackwood NJ, and typically fosters around six to eight cats and kittens at a time.

Rather than meeting an adoptable cat in a traditional shelter environment, visitors can spend time with them while they're playing, sleeping, exploring, and generally being themselves. The lounge is equipped with toys, food, water and plenty of cozy beds, giving the cats a comfortable temporary home while providing potential adopters with an opportunity to see more of their personalities.

So How Does Catmosphere Work?

First things first, you don't have to be looking to adopt a cat to visit. The cafe and cat lounge are separate spaces, so you can stop in for a coffee even if spending an hour surrounded by cats isn't quite your thing. For those who do want the full experience, Catmosphere offers hour-long cat room sessions as well as walk-in opportunities when space is available.

Inside, visitors can relax and interact with the cats while they roam around their temporary home. That creates an entirely different adoption experience; instead of choosing a pet based on a quick interaction, potential adopters get the chance to sit down, spend some time with the cats and see which one naturally gravitates toward them. (Of course, sometimes the cat might even do the choosing.)

Why Catmosphere Chose Collingswood NJ

Catmosphere founders Sophia Coello and Marcus Tirado were looking for a community with foot traffic and an appreciation for animals when they were looking for a storefront. Haddon Avenue has increasingly become a place where independent businesses can become part of the personality of the town itself. Collingswood's downtown isn't built around one enormous shopping center or a collection of national chains; instead it’s a walkable corridor of restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, and community spaces.

And Catmosphere adds something completely different to that lineup. You might come to Haddon Avenue for lunch, the farmers' market, shopping, or dinner at one of Collingswood’s BYOB restaurants—and now, you might come home with a cat.

Haddon Avenue Continues to Evolve

Catmosphere's opening also comes at an interesting time for downtown Collingswood. The borough has long been known throughout South Jersey for its restaurant scene, walkable downtown and independent businesses. But the businesses opening along the corridor increasingly give people reasons to visit Collingswood beyond simply going out for dinner.

A concept like Catmosphere is a perfect example. It's a coffee shop, but it's also an experience. It's an adoption space, but it's also a community gathering place. And its owners have talked about eventually expanding that community role through workshops, educational opportunities, local-school partnerships and events.

What Makes Collingswood Such a Popular South Jersey Town?

If you're unfamiliar with Collingswood, the downtown is only part of its appeal. Located in Camden County just outside Philadelphia, Collingswood has developed into one of South Jersey's best-known walkable communities. Haddon Avenue gives residents access to restaurants, cafes, shops and community events, while the PATCO Speedline provides convenient transportation into Philadelphia. Move a few blocks away from downtown and you’ll find established neighborhoods, tree-lined streets, older homes and parks. That combination is a major reason buyers continue to look at Collingswood.

You can have the feel of a traditional South Jersey neighborhood while still being able to walk downtown for coffee, dinner, shopping or an event. And every interesting new business that opens along Haddon Avenue adds another small piece to that lifestyle.

More Than Just Cats and Coffee

It’s easy to look at a cat cafe and think of it as a fun novelty. But Catmosphere has a much bigger purpose behind it. Every cat spending time in the lounge is getting exposure to potential adopters while temporarily freeing up space at Homeward Bound. Visitors get the opportunity to interact with adoptable animals in a relaxed environment.

And Collingswood gets another independently owned business bringing something completely different to Haddon Avenue. Three cats finding homes within the first week is a pretty good start. Now the question is how many more matches will happen over a cup of coffee.

Would you visit Catmosphere for the coffee, the cats, or both? And could you actually spend an hour with adoptable kittens without wanting to bring one home? Let us know what you think.
