From a 1905 School to Modern Workspace

Historic documentation describes the Zane School as a three-story Colonial Revival red-brick building constructed in 1905 and designed by architect Henry Alexander Macomb. The building is considered a contributing property within Collingswood’s historic commercial district.

Its life as a school didn’t last forever.

The property was later adapted for office use, and current commercial listings say it was transformed into architectural offices in 1999. Now, another substantial renovation is underway.

The goal is to create flexible spaces capable of accommodating professional, medical, creative, and other commercial tenants while retaining the historic building rather than replacing it with new construction.

What’s Changing at 756 Haddon Avenue?

Current plans and leasing information describe upgrades throughout the three-story property.

Improvements include a new entrance, HVAC systems, windows, restrooms, lighting, and updated building systems. The ground-level space is being designed for flexible office or retail use, while additional office space is available on the upper floors.

The property also offers something particularly valuable in downtown Collingswood: a sizable private parking area.

And the location puts future tenants only about a block from PATCO while keeping them within walking distance of Haddon Avenue’s restaurants, shops, and other businesses.

Medical and Professional Uses Are Part of the Plan

The redevelopment isn’t simply speculative.

Current leasing information says the building is already approximately 30% pre-leased, with half of the third floor under lease to a medical practice expected to move in before the end of 2026.

The remaining spaces are being marketed for a range of possible uses, including medical, professional, creative, legal, and technology businesses.

That could make the Old Zane School feel very different on the inside while keeping one of Haddon Avenue’s familiar historic buildings in place.

When Could the Renovated Zane School Open?

The timeline is approaching quickly.

Current leasing information lists spaces becoming available beginning in November 2026, with the overall renovation targeting occupancy during the fourth quarter of 2026 and first quarter of 2027.

That means Collingswood residents could begin seeing the building’s next chapter take shape over the coming months.

A New Chapter for an Old Collingswood Building

Downtown Collingswood has changed considerably since students first entered the Zane School in 1905.

Restaurants have opened, businesses have changed, PATCO has transformed how residents travel between South Jersey and Philadelphia, and Haddon Avenue has developed into the downtown corridor residents know today.

Through all of that, the former school has remained.

Now, rather than disappearing, the 120-year-old building is being adapted again.

For a community with so much historic architecture woven into its downtown, 756 Haddon Avenue is another example of how an older property can take on a completely different purpose while retaining the character that makes it recognizable.
