This City Just Beat NYC, Boston & Chicago In Walkability

For the third consecutive year, USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards has crowned Philadelphia the Most Walkable City in the United States—and honestly, we’re not surprised.

In a country full of sprawling metropolises and traffic-heavy commutes, Philly stands out for one very simple reason: you can truly experience the heart of the city on foot.

What Makes Philly So Walkable?

A big part of Philly’s pedestrian-friendly layout dates back to the 17th century, when founder William Penn envisioned a “Greene Countrie Towne.” His grid-style street system—complete with wide avenues, numbered streets, and five public squares—made it easy to get around. Fast forward 300 years, and that thoughtful planning still shapes how we move through the city today.

From the Delaware River to the Schuylkill, Center City Philadelphia spans just 2.4 miles wide—meaning you can cross it end-to-end in under an hour. That compact footprint connects neighborhoods, landmarks, parks, shops, restaurants, and museums without ever needing a car.

More Than Just Easy Navigation

Philadelphia’s walkability is more than just a convenience—it’s an experience. Every block tells a story. You’ll stumble upon cobblestone alleys, pop-up art installations, historic landmarks, buzzing food markets, and some of the best people-watching on the East Coast.

Whether you’re heading out for a date night, exploring with visiting family, or commuting to work, walking is often the fastest and most scenic route.

It’s Not Just Us Saying It…

In addition to this recent title from USA Today, Philadelphia has also been recognized in 2025 as:

  • One of the Top 10 U.S. Cities for Food & Drink by Food & Wine
  • One of Tripadvisor’s Top U.S. Destinations
  • The Best City in America for Street Art (also by USA Today)

Want to See for Yourself?

If you’re local, challenge yourself to go car-free for a day and take in the city on foot. You might notice things you usually breeze past. And if you're visiting, skip the rental—Philly’s walkable streets are the best guide you’ll find. From Revolutionary history to modern-day murals, from bustling markets to peaceful green spaces — Philly is made to be walked.

What Does This Mean for Philadelphia Homeowners?

All this walkability isn’t just good for your step count—it’s great for property value, too. Cities that are highly walkable often see stronger demand for housing, higher resale value, and more competitive real estate markets. Walkability is one of the top features homebuyers are looking for, and Philadelphia just proved it delivers—big time.

If you own a home in Philly, now’s a great time to find out what it’s worth. Whether you’re curious, planning to sell, or just want to keep tabs on your biggest investment, checking your home value is a smart move—especially in a city where the sidewalk might just lead to a higher sale price.
